Research, Prepare, Present

Good morning,

In preparation for our reading of The Crucible (you have checked that out right?) you will be spending the next two days working on a mini-research project and preparing a presentation about a related topic.

• I will assign you to a group and I'll assign your group a topic.
• Share a presentation with each other in Google Docs so that you can all contribute what you find. Work quickly.  You should have 8-10 slides. 
• Consider history (origins), definitions, examples, important facts, impact on society, future significance, important individuals etc.
• Incorporate (and cite) images related to your topic to make your presentation interesting to your audience.
• Create three multiple choice questions that someone would be able to answer after listening to your presentation. Consider “why and how” questions first.  (Your group will turn in these questions tomorrow.)
• Each person in your group will be presenting this at least once to another group of peers.

2.    Cold War Period (focus on 1950’s)
3.    Rise and Effects of McCarthyism
4.    Mass Hysteria
5.    Arthur Miller
6.    Puritan New England
7.    Salem Witch Trials

Claude Mckay Quick Research

We need to take a break from Gatsby and do a quick side project.  Needs to be finished today.

1. Work with your writing group. 
2. Create a new document for your answers to the questions below, (share it with each other and me.) 
3. Divide up the questions as you search out the answers.
4. Write about what you find in complete sentences so they will make sense to the other members of your group. 
5. You should include a citation with EACH answer. Use Easybib or Citation machine.
6. Copy this work for yourself into your English Journal.

Google Books

Good morning,
 Yesterday our work was focused on those of you needing to add evidence to your essays. We looked at how quoted evidence makes your argument stronger and also at some of the sentence starters you can use to follow a quote.

Today I want to give a little help to those of you working on project option 1, but the rest of you will also likely find some time soon when this will be helpful to you. We are going to look at Google Books.

With Google Books you can search by title or topic. And then, once you have found the book you can even search INSIDE the book. Try it. Search for "salem witch trials", pick a book and then use the search box on the left that says "search in this book". Try typing in the name of a person you are interested in, Proctor for example.

Why would it be helpful to be able to find a book like this on-line? Why would it be helpful to be able to search inside the book? How would you cite your source? Is this a primary or secondary source? (trick question)

A few of you still need to share your Crucible Project with me in Google Docs. Please make sure you do that today.  Your draft is due tomorrow.
